Fig. 3. Vote Choice in the 2013 Iranian Presidential Election by Educational Attainment (2016 Iran Social Survey). Note: N = 2,621, out of a total of 4,029 (65%) age-eligible respondents who recalled their vote choice and reported their education; bars represent 95% confidence intervals. Of the remainder, 1,012 (25%) reported not voting in the election and 396 (9.8%) answered “don't know.” Higher-educated respondents were more likely to report vote choice, and no significant difference by educational attainment is found between nonvoters and voters. Source: Harris & Tavana (2017); for survey methodology see Harris & Tavana (2018).

In Fig. 4, I group together surveyed individuals who voted in the 2013 election for either Rouhani or any of his opponents by monthly household income. The low-income group consists of individuals from households under the median reported income, while the high-income group consists of the individuals from the top 5% income stratum. The middle-income group consists of those households that are often defined as middle class by social scientists (e.g., Farzanegan, Alaedini, & Azizimehr, 2017). Yet there is no evident difference between Rouhani voters across income groups. Individuals from all three income groupings were equally likely to be associated with voting for Rouhani.
